Bug Description

Applet windows can be opened twice. For instance:

System > Preferences > Display
then
System > Preferences > Display

opens two Display Preferences windows.

This is unhelpful. If you open a menu item, get distracted and do some other things, then open it again, it should find the already open applet window and bring it to the front.

That's an interesting point. So selecting system dialogs like Display, Default Printer, Mouse, Keyboard, Appearance from the menu would focus the already open window?

This happens to some menu items. Synaptic isnt one of them. But this shouldnt happen.

@Ken McLean: Could you provide a list of all the other menu items which have the same behavior.

So as you can see, only half a dozen applets actually stopped itself from opening twice, and some of these better than others. Some (like Network) were flawless. Some caused a second 'Starting [application]' task bar window to appear and hang, before reverting to the primary window. Either way it is very inconsistent across the operating system.

The list of affected is too huge to be dealt with in the papercuts project.

Changing it to Ayatana where this could be given proper attention required.

I don't mean to be precious, but this needs to be allocated to a project. I don't know enough about ubuntu components to assign it myself. Who can I ask that would know?

@Ken McLean:
You are right , initially there was "ayatana" for this but, at present, there is no such project. We need to start a project for such big tasks.

All the bugs which were assigned to ayatana were lost in a black hole and were *not* even accessible to regular users , since the project ayatana was closed and re-opened in a different name & with a different purpose.

And members ,such as yourself, have put effort into reporting these bugs with all the information necessary.

So I'v had to discuss with the LP admins[only they had access to such lost bugs] and had such bugs reopened by
** Project changed: dead-ayatana => hundredpapercuts
This was to make sure that these bugs are not lost forever.

And the status "Wont fix" is for my reference, to get back to them later. I didnt want to explain this in every bug affected by this ;p
 Hope that made some sense to you ? Kindly be patient :)

@Mpt , any suggestions ? you know where to find me ;)
