Eye of Gnome should have Image Collection enabled by default

Bug Description

This is a really, really simple fix. The Image Collection feature of Eye of Gnome, the default picture viewer, is disabled by default and buried in a menu. All the other major OSes have this enabled by default (even integrated into the file browsers). It's really useful and probably unused because it's turned off by default.

The only corollary is to make sure that the windows size fits properly on the desktop.

The issue is an upstream one and it would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug the to the people writting the software (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME)

I think the bets way to go forward is to by default have the 'Collection' button in the toolbar, this way it is very easy to activate.

The reason I say this is because at the moment, eog is used as a quick image viewer. For this purpose it does not need the collection pane as eog is typically used for viewing one image, and then closed.

Any comments? If not then I shall make the debdiff

Attached is a debdiff that adds the Collection button to the toolbar by default

Reasoning:
The 'Collection' feature (as seen here : http://pokornypavel.cz/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/eye-of-gnome.png) is a very useful feature. Not only is it additional eyecandy, but it allows a user to see a lot more easily the pictures in a directory.

The person filing the bug report suggested having the view enable by default however I don't think this is the best way forward. Ubuntu typically uses EOG as a quick picture viewer (you can see this by how it is hidden in the Applications menu), not for showing slideshows or a number of pictures (this is what F-Spot is for). If we set the collection view as default this would be adding bloat not needed for it's purpose, however because the collection view is so good, I feel that we should make the user more aware of it's existence.

The patch puts the button on the toolbar by default, allowing the user to see the collection view. This patch simplifies the step of looking at the collection view from 4 clicks & a drag to one click.

I think this is an awesome solution to the original problem. Send upstream?

Sure, attached is the screenshot

I don't know whether to send this upstream as all it is doing is altering the default config, the option for the collection view is still there, could omseone more experienced advise on what I should do? (Rich, If you are that experienced person could you say)

Thanks

Well, I'm not particularly experienced, but I'd always suggest sending patches upstream. I think this is a good improvement which would improve the upstream version as well.

Make a bug there, submit the patch and link them to this thread.

Thank you for your work there, it's not clear that we want that on by default though so unsubscribing the sponsors until that is discussed with the design team or on mailing list or send upstream and get comments there

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu 9.10 install, that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

-This is an unnecessary duplication/complication... we already have fspot for photo collections and a bunch of nice new features , not sure why EOG needs a collection too!
This would have been a great idea before fspot's recent development but now it seems unnecessary
Do note the two apps are in the default install. [This would be unnecessary duplication]
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the papercuts project.

Also this change needs to be sent upstream as already mentioned in comment #1
