Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu Jaunty 64bit on my Thinkpad T500, and randomly I have system freezes. It seems the freezes happen regardless of what I'm doing (browsing the web while listening to music with rhythmbox). Also at the beginning, I had freezes with caps lock blinking, for the last freezes this was not the case. Can't move the mouse, or do anything beside shutdown the laptop. I noticed that the freezes happened not long after I began to use the laptop (a matter of minutes) whereas most of the time I can use the laptop for hours without problem.

I already tested the memory with memtest, so I don't think it's a hardware failure. And I'm also using updated intel driver from this ppa: http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu

I just had a freeze with kernel 2.6.30 , while doing the usual thing (browsing the web while listening to some music). I'm connected to my router by WiFi. Maybe I should try Jaunty 32 bit to see if this also happens.

Same problem for me on Thinkpad T400 with 2.6.28.13 kernel 64bit, with pretty much identical log files. Actually, the 2.6.28.13 kernel is much more stable for me (maybe 1 freeze per few days) vs the 2.6.28.14 and 2.6.28.15 kernels (every few hours it seems). Maybe you guys could try installing 13 and see if things get better as a way to trace this bug. It should be easy, these are all in the Ubuntu repositories. I'll try 2.6.30.* and see if that fixes the problem too.

Hi bofphile,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 386973

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
