Bug Description

I have a HP Elitebook 8530w with the following graphics adaptor:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 3604
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
        Memory at c0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        Memory at d8300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
        I/O ports at 7000 [size=256]
Expansion ROM at d8320000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [a0] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [100] Vendor Specific Information <?>
        Kernel driver in use: fglrx_pci

If I go to Hardware Devices in the Gnome menu and activate the ATI driver. The system is no longer able to present the Gnome login page (GDM) and instead I get a black/blank screen. I can not do anything but power off the machine. I cannot go to another console by presseing Ctrl+Alt+F2. Nothing works.

I am currently running Ubuntu 9.04, but I had the exact same problem in 8.10. Both AMD64. I am real tired of the poor graphics and poor 2D performance, can you help me?

I Think it is the xorg-driver-fglrx package.

No it is fixed, but another problem appered that makes it unusable.

When all eye candy in Ubuntu is turned on, minimizing and maximizing windows takes 1-2 seconds, where the computer freezes.
