Bug Description

This is a bug which is simply not going away, and I have no idea what is causing it. This is fairly severe for me, as I am no longer able to get into a virtual terminal with a Alt+Shift+F1 combination. But more importantly, I am no longer able to shut down this system either.

I upgraded from Breezy to Dapper. The graphics card in question is a XFX NVidia FX 5950 Ultra. Under Breezy, everything worked as expected. Under Dapper, the system is totally unresponsive when switch to a VT, and fails to shut down, showing a rather alarming screen instead (which I will attach pictures of when I report this bug - the screen varies slightly each time).

Currently installed is 1.0.8178+2.6.15.7-3. There is, however a new version of the NVidia driver out today, as shown here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html - This newer driver may fix the problem, I understand a version freeze is in effect, however this is a critical bug for myself and maybe others...

This is the first time I noticed this bug. This is after I told the computer to reboot. Thinking it was a one-off, I tried again.

This is the second attempt. This time it was a shutdown. I left the system for 20 minutes to allow itself to shutdown, and I still saw this screen when I came back to it.

8756 drivers are in Dapper now, and do not fix this issue. I have just spoken to someone in #ubuntu+1 on Freenode, and he is having the same issue, except he sees just a black screen.

Same situation here. Running 2.6.16 pachted with ck3, no Splash, and hangs too at shutdown. Doesn't matter if shutdown was initiated via On/off Button or Halt in console.

Could this be related to BIOS configuration? I haven't seen it in Ubuntu, but I've had similar experiences that were resolved by reconfiguring my BIOS to remove anything that wasn't really being used and that sort of thing.
