If my screen is locked, and an Update Manager popup window appears that informs about available critical updates, the desktop contents become visible for a few moments when I touch the mouse to light up the screen and show the login prompt.

In my case it's more than a few moments. For the last few releases my screen saver hasn't gone to the login prompt on a mouse move, only on a click; I thought this was intentional because there's no setting for it in System > Prefs > Screensaver. So the desktop is visible as long as I don't click.
Jaunty, with the default packages.
