Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
Package-
totem:
  Installed: 2.26.1-0ubuntu5
  Candidate: 2.26.1-0ubuntu5
  Version table:

In Totem I selected to play a Movie in the DVD player and tool crashes (same happens in VLC Media Player). The player will play audio CD's.

Background:
Installed Ubuntu yesterday - system had CD reader. Replaced CD with Liteon 22X internal DVD/CD today. Installed libdvdcss2 (and other instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs).

Debug Info: Ran totem --debug
1) The immediate reply is :
/var/lib/python-support/python2.6/gdata/tlslite/utils/cryptomath.py:9: DeprecationWarning: the sha module is deprecated; use the hashlib module instead
  import sha

2) After selecting Movie->Play Disc, the following is reported (abbreviated where noted) and tool crashes:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 113 error_code 11 request_code 132 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I attempted all the backtrace instructions and attached the log, but I'm not certain there is any more information than before (since there appears to be no symbol table information available).

there is no stacktrace there, some notes:
- you need to install libgtk2.0-0-dbg
- run gdb totem
(gdb) break gdk_x_error
(gdb) run --sync
... get the crash
(gdb) bt full

and then copy the stacktrace there

Added the ligbtk2.0-0-dbg and captured the run and backtrace. Now attached.

could you install libx11-6-dbgsym gstreamer0.10-x-dbgsym libgstreamer0.10-0-dbgsym and get a new stacktrace? what videocard and driver do you use? do you get the issue on any DVD and only DVD or also videos?

New stacktrace attached.

Videocard - default built into Dell Dimension L1000R (machine RAM is 256MB). I don't know how to determine what video driver is in use.

I get the issue on any DVD. It plays some youtube videos correctly, but has color problems on some others and can't keep full framerate.

Correction - it is my internet movie playing that has color and framerate problems. Accessing youtube through totem seems fine. It plays audio CDs fine as well as youtube videos.

the issue is similar to bug #257349

Bug #257349 was fixed with Ubuntu 9.04 and gstreamer0.10-plugins-base version 0.10.22-3, I have the same Ubuntu and have an even newer version of the plugin: gstreamer0.10-plugins-base version 0.10.22-5.

I copied the entire contents of a DVD to the hard drive, and totem is unable to play even the individual video files without crashing.
