Bug Description

Binary package hint: wdm

WDM allows only one login. Once you logout of your session you can type in your user name but the [enter] key doesn't advance you to the password entry. This means that you can't perform any of the WDM functions that require a password. I can restart WDM (/etc/init.d/wdm stop; /etc/init.d/wdm start) and it will allow one more login.

I tried replacing WDM from Ubuntu with the one that works for me on Debian 5. It did not fix the problem. So maybe the bug is really in the X server.

I'm having this problem on two different machines. The only two I've tried to use Ubuntu on. One is using an i845 graphics chip and the other is using an ATI ES1000.

Ubuntu: Ubuntu Server 9.04
WDM: wdm_1.28-3ubuntu1
Xorg: xserver-xorg_1:7.4~5ubuntu1

That is odd. I gave up on Ubuntu and switched to Debian Lenny. It eliminated this problem and a number of others. I have Lenny and Etch on several computers using WDM and have only one small problem. Later releases of WDM don't seem to want to work with less than 24bit color. I've been using WDM for 6 or seven years now so have had much experience with it on several different distributions.

Just for the grins and giggles of it I installed the Debian Lenny WDM package on Ubuntu and it still didn't work. I have used it in conjunction with the following window managers:
Gnome (Ubuntu)
Black Box (Ubuntu & Lenny)
E16 (Lenny)

On Ubuntu its just broken. Lenny its worked for me. Seems to be some incompatibility between the Xorg on Ubuntu and WDM. Lenny is using a previous release of Xorg.

This is happening in Arch Linux too, so it seems like the more outdated distros like Lenny, Centos, etc., are the only ones where WDM still works correctly. There is one workaround that I know of, rather than clicking on exit or logout you need to shutdown the xserver via Alt-PrtScr-K (used to be Alt-Ctrl-Backspace) and then you will be able to log in again. WDM isn't restarting the xsession properly. In addition to the logout issue, you cannot get realtime prio even with the linux-rt kernel if you login via WDM. Realtime works correctly if you login with KDM, GDM, and XDM.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to file in a bug and help making Ubuntu better. In order to better help you, we would need some additional information:

- Can this issue be reproduced with the latest release of Ubuntu (9.10)?
- Do the workarounds specified in the Debian bug (http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=472703) work?

Thanks!

I have the same bug in Debian testing (squeeze) and FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE. Using Windowmaker in both. Once I exit Windowmaker once, the WDM login window does not respond to the enter key. I can type letters and numbers in the window, but the enter key does not work. (WDM does not have a "Login" button so it is not possible to send the login without the enter key).

According to the linked Debian bug report this has been fixed in xserver-xorg-core 4 years ago. So the issue should be fixed in Ubuntu, too.

Feel free to reopen if the issue is still present.
