Bug Description

Binary package hint: notify-osd

I have a Verizon Wireless Broadband USB727 Novatel Wireless 3G CDMA modem. Everytime I click on its radio button in NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0.100 and the connection is established, the notify-osd bubble flashes several times (half a dozen or so), then stays on for its normal duration.

I have made no changes to the connection (as this breaks the Disconnect radio button, another bug report to follow); so, everything is at default. Plug the card into a USB slot, let nm auto create the connection, left-click on nm-applet, click the "Auto Mobile Broadband (CDMA) connection" radio button, and allow it to connect; then, watch the notify-osd bubble as it flashes several times prior to settling down and displaying normally for the duration of its screen time.

+ I am using metacity - no fancy anything.

I'm not 100% sure what it looks like. Could you provide a screencast (e.g. recorded with GtkRecordMyDesktop)? Do you think it's a rendering-bug of notify-osd or a wrong use of network-manager? A screencast would help me guess that better.

Maybe this will do.

10 messages were sent in a 2 second span. That is what seems to cause the flashing.

Hm... that looks like some odd misbehaving of NetworkManager there. On the other hand-side throttling/"spam-protection" in notify-osd isn't in place yet to. Does it somehow look like in the screencast I attached?

Not quite, the messages blink very quickly, over-writing the previous one. Maybe speed up your video by 20x and that will be it.
After the final one blinks/is displayed, it remains for the normal duration of bubbles.

So, is this a network manager problem? Does the package need changed over?
Or will it just go down as spam control not being implemented yet?

Network-Manager should update a notification and not create a new one. I've attached a stand-alone Python example simulating/demonstrating how this should be done in NetworkManager. The attached screencast shows the visual result (no flashing). The numbers in brackets in the notifications title is just a mean to show it's actually changing/updating.

Yes. Thank you for keeping an eye on this & adding your information.
This is exactly the problem I noticed, but was unable to put in to words!

I have just installed Karmic final release & will try pluging in my CDMA
card at some point to test if the newer version of nm[-applet] has fixed
this or not (I got cable since I posted the bug & don't have a need for
CDMA, but I will get around to it.)

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect 384622 and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

I no longer have access to a CDMA USB device and no other connection types were producing this behaviour. As such, I have not observed the issue in some time.
