Bug Description

I downloaded testxv.c from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_video_extension and compiled it with suggested command line. It does compile without problem. Problem is when i run that, program will not work well on my system. It worked first time i tried. Second time it did break X, so graphics failed to work and only gray screen was there. Switching to text console did not work, ctlr+alt+backspace also. I have Jaunty upgraded from hardy, on Sony Vaio VGN-FZ210C laptop. It reported hardware failure to dmesg, but i dont have saved logs. Network access via ssh worked, but sudo reboot did not finish.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. To have any chance to find out what the underlying problem is, we need a few files from you attached to this bug report:
- the output of the command `lspci -vvnn` (identifies your hardware more precisely)
- /etc/X11/xorg.conf
- /var/log/Xorg.0.log
- the output of `dmesg`

For the two last files, it would be nice if we could have multiple versions: One from after you log in but before you run the test program, one from after you ran the test program the first time (and state if this broke anything), and one after the test program breaks your X. This way, we can see what lines were added to the logs at each stage.

I tested it a little. It worked fine for some time, but problem occured when i moved it before terminal window, then clicked on terminal to make it hidden. That worked well, it did speed up. Then i tried to move terminal window to partially uncover program window. Right then screen got gray and no more i could do anything using keyboard or mouse. After soft reboot, only on running testxv again it blanks screen right after start, no moving or hiding window is needed.

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

It seems likely to me this bug is gone; the -intel driver has improved immensely in Karmic and a lot of bugs are being reported as no longer present. So hopefully that's the case here too.
