Bug Description

Binary package hint: eog

eog trys to open very large images. If the image is too big, the system is just swaping, and it is hard to stop it.
possible solutions:
  - eog should not open very large images
  - eog could create carefuly a scaled small version of the image, and shows the scaled down version

Same here.
When i open this file:
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/File:Image-Grand_central_Station_Outside_Night_2.jpg

in firefox.. everything is fine.. if is opened with shotwell everything fine... but if i open with eye of gnome system freezes - actually you can hardly move the mouse but you cant click nothing.. you cant even go into terminal.

But with small images is no problem.

I have Ubuntu 11.10 64_bit version.

Files (JPG) with a size of 11MB use ~100MB memory,
with a size of 70MB+ use more than 1GB memory and don't use the swap (it seems so).

On the window: The application open and the borders/menu is visible. The Prozessbar can run to the end and hide. The place for the image is still black. Than the Computer freeze. The mouse are able to move the first 2-3 secounds than it freeze too.

Focus a other window or change to console(tty1...6) are not possible.
The Bug can reproduced.

with Ubuntu 11.4 I could load this file without problems.

My system:
Memory: 3,7 GB
Prozessor: Intel® Core™ i3 CPU M 380 @ 2.53GHz × 4
Grafic: Intel® Ironlake Mobile
Swap: 4GB
OS: Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit
Kenel: 3.0.0-14-generic
Gnome 3.2.1 Fallbackmodus
GTK 2+3 installed
eog 3.2.1-0ubuntu1

It's been 3 years with no sign of this bug being fixed.
feh is similar to but better than eog. It can load large images ok, runs much much faster than eog, and is more featureful.

 $ apt-get install feh
 $ feh -dZF Image-Grand_central_Station_Outside_Night_2.jpg

eog allocated a lot of memory & possible caused a memory leak, the PC became unusable. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) Beta 2 with latest update as of today.

eog --version
GNOME Image Viewer 3.4.1

Hey bug-watch-updater, this is a real bug in Eye of GNOME, so quit trying to hide the existence of this bug from the devs.

Right now I just have one 2mb image (a photo taken with an iphone 4s) opened and eog is taking 92mb of ram! That is outrageous and should be addressed.
