Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-71

Let me start by saying thanks for your work on this great free product.

Info on my problem:
-My video card is a RIVA TNT PCI card.
-I installed command-line-only Ubuntu from the Alternate install CD.
-It displayed correctly when I used an S3 PCI video card.
-I am using Ubuntu 9.04
-The characters display perfectly before Ubuntu loading begins
-I am able to at least see the whole screen if I force grub to load vga=261 (VESA 256 color mode).
-I installed nvidia-glx-71 using apt-get and I still have the problem after reboot.

Please let me know if you need any further information.

Thanks,
Will

I believe that I have the same symptom trying to install a LowMemorySystem version of Jaunty.

The machine details are:

       BIOS Date: 04/22/99
BIOS Version: PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.0
       Machine Type: IBM PC/AT
       Processor Vendor: GenuineIntel
       Processor Type: Pentium(r) III Processor
       Math Co-processor: Present

Like Will the display is fine during the installation process. once it starts Ubuntu itself then the text gets bigger and I cannot see what I am typing.

I don't know how to force grub to load vga=261 and so have not tried this.

I have not installed nvidia-glx-71.

Thanks for any help.

Nick

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Please remember that there is no graphic driver from nvidia for tnt and other nvidia-graphics-drivers-71 cards in Karmic (because nvidia hasn't updated their driver), so you need to test this with the nv driver.

This means that if you still have a problem with the resolution and/or screen centering, then you're getting bug 292264 and in that case you should use the "this bug affects me too" link in bug 292264.

Ok, that is the case. I will make a comment on buy 292264. Please close this bug.

Thanks for your work,

Ugh, bug 292264 is not the same. I am not using a display manager, I am in text only mode -- but the sizing and off center problems occur there.

I'm closing this bug, since you're using Karmic in which nvidia-graphics-drivers-71 is not available.

Good deal. Actually I tested with the newest Ubuntu version, and the bug itself is gone. Thanks again for you work.
