I saw the same symptoms with 180.44-0ubuntu1 on 9.04:

daemon.log:Jun 1 15:39:18 fringe gdm[3199]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

But nothing unusual in Xorg.0.log*.

Perhaps resolved in the 180.60 version, which someone commented in Bug #355155 resolved a crash problem.

Same thing has happened again today.
Jun 5 12:04:04 aetna gdm[3723]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :0

I don't have the x log any more

I've updated to
nvidia id: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 180.60 Mon May 11 15:27:42 PDT 2009
from the nvidia website, using NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-180.60-pkg2.run

Similar crash again just now. No GDM log this time, just an X crash followed by GDM restarting.
From login to crash was ~15 minutes.

arthurb@aetna:~$ uname -a
Linux aetna 2.6.28-13-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jun 2 07:55:09 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
arthurb@aetna:~$ strings /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko | grep ^nvidia\ id
nvidia id: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 180.60 Mon May 11 15:27:42 PDT 2009

Twinview with compositing enabled, if that helps. Xorg.0.log.old is attached.

I've posted a new version of the -nvidia driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

Get nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 - 185.18.14 here:

Yep, same issue here.

It seems to happen only when playing with open office but i had the same kind of issue with intrepid on my previous computer with completely different hardware and the way to reproduce the crash was just to use gdesklet or system monitor.
So, this is not a major issue for me as X don't crash often but for some other users it's a real nightmare.

I have to say that this bug is the most annoying and frustrating i've ever had with linux as the message in the log just tells nothing about the root cause and we have had this issue with every ubunbu release.
This is the only reason why in my mind linux is a bit less stable than other OS, X souldn't crash like that without giving useful info about the root cause of the crash, this is just frustrating.

Hope something can be done to enhance the log with useful infos when X crash.
