Bug Description

xubuntu-meta on Jaunty pulls in both gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver, each of which adds a "Screensaver" item to the Applications > Settings menu. See

    /usr/share/applications/gnome-screensaver-preferences.desktop
    /usr/share/applications/xscreensaver-properties.desktop

(Additionally, there is an "XScreenSaver Setup" item under Applications > System.)

I think the metapackage Recommends: need to be tweaked so that only one of the two is pulled in.

Thanks for reporting this bug. Using the final release ISO Xubuntu Jaunty 9.04, xubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso and xubuntu-9.04-alternate-amd64.iso I performed fresh installations. Both installations had a single choice for "Applications -> Settings -> Screensaver". Please make sure you are using the latest release cd.

Was this an upgrade?
Was this adding Xubuntu to Ubuntu or Kubuntu?

This is starting from a command-line system, and doing "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop".

I am currently working around this by using "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop gnome-screensaver-", going with XScreenSaver (though I don't know if that is supposed to be the favored one).

Installed Xubuntu 9.04 using jaunty-alternative-i386.iso. Prior to installation, selected "command-line installation". After installation completed, installed desktop using "apt-get install xubuntu-desktop". When the system is rebooted into the GUI, there are two selections for Applications -> Settings -> Screensaver. Installing by selecting "Install Xubuntu" from the menu, there is only one selection for Applications -> Settings -> Screensaver.

Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Thanks for reporting. This bug is probably be related to bug #21960 in Ubuntu and will require a similar fix. Marking as duplicate.

rCX: thanks for trying to help. However, probably won't work. You need to make sure of these things. Please ask in #ubuntu-bugs if you need help. This bug is not the result of actions by the user, as bug 21960 is. It is not related to it. When you see Lionel Le Folgoc's name on a Xubuntu bug, he is one of the main developers in Xubuntu. Please do not mark those bugs duplicates, invalid, etc. He, as the developer, will be following them if they are triaged or confirmed and will change status when they are fixed.

Thanks.

No longer a duplicate of bug 21960.

I can confirm that this issue is still active in Lucid. Adding xscreensaver to Xubuntu Lucid, I now have two "Screensaver " listings in Applications -> Settings. Since they activate different screensaver settings, perhaps the names need to be changed to show which screensaver the settings are for?

We only install xscreensaver in lucid, so this is "fixed" on our side. For the naming problem, I think a bug against gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver should be filed, otherwise nothing will change.

Looks like there's a re-opened bug on that issue in xscreensaver: Bug #21960
