Bug Description

I get absolutely no sound, whether running with or without pulseaudio. I have tried nearly everything at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems, as well as various other suggestions in other bug reports and forums, (including resetting everything by purging and reinstalling alsa) to no avail.

pavumeter does move when I play audio, but no sound comes out.

I've tried two different sets of speakers, as well as headphones -- not a peep.

This is a fresh Intrepid Ibex install. Machine was previously a fedora box, sound did work there.

to verify that my hardware or wiring wasn't somehow fried, I booted a liveCD of edgy eft and sound works fine there. If I can find my Intrepid CD I'll try that too (just for kicks).

Also, I can confirm that all the volumes are up and nothing is muted in alsamixer.

I added:

options snd-intel8x0 enable=1

to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, rebooted, and everything *finally* worked, so the issue is resolved for me.

Seems like this kind of thing shouldn't be necessary, though -- shouldn't the system figure this out on install, or, assuming I mucked things up somehow after the install, after I purge and reinstall alsa and friends? Is it getting confused by the sound capabilities of my bttv (snd_bt87x), and not able to choose which one should be enabled, maybe?

Hi garyjefferson,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 381544

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
