karmic shutdown fails on IBM Thinkpad T40 if booted with "quiet splash".

Linux version 2.6.30-5-generic (buildd@rothera) (gcc version 4.4.1 (Ubuntu 4.4.0-3ubuntu3) ) #6-Ubuntu SMP Mon May 11 19:56:30 UTC 2009

Updates as of today as well.

Normal boot with "quiet splash" has several problems:

1. USB logitech mouse not recognized. The trackpoint works.
2. USB IBM keyboard not recognized. The builtin keyboard works.
3. Screen comes up half bright.
4. Shutdown gets message "Power manager not responding". I select "continue".
5. Shutdown then hangs with black screen and blinking cursor
6. Ctrl-Alt-F1 shows screen with "T40 login:" however keyboard produces no response.
7. Power off pushbutton required.
8. Syslog is attached, protection faults, segment faults, various other ominous messages.

Boot with "quiet splash" removed works normally. USB devices detected & work, shutdown works, ...
Boot in recovery mode works normally as well.
Syslog is attached showing USB Logitech mouse, ... as expected.

T40 runs Intrepid, Jaunty just fine.

I have karmic running on Thinkpad R31, ThinkCentre A30 tower, Compaq Presario tower. None have this problem.

Reproducable at will. Let me know of anything else you may want

Note, Ubuntu runs quite well on this machine. GtkPerf is about 12.5 using driver "ati" which is default, seems to be pretty good for a 1.5 gHz Pentium.

I can confirm this issue on my T40.
Normal boot with "quiet splash" has the same 8 problems reported by jerrylamos.
I've to boot using the Recovery mode or without splash.

I have similar problems with my T42. But my symptoms are slightly different

1) No mousepad, trackpoint or any attached USB mouse is working
2) USB port has problems with all kind of devices, but works sometimes without problems
3) I have the same shutdown problems as jerry

Removing "quiet splash" works for me as well. Every problem described disappears.

The problem seems related to this warning during the boot:

general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP

It doesn't appear booting w/o "quiet splash".. googling i haven't found a working solution at the moment.

I am able to reproduce the shutdown problem (USB peripherals and trackpad work though) on a T43 with kernel 2.6.31-7-generic. I tried the 2.6.28-15-generic kernel and did not encounter this issue.

This appears fixed on the 2.6.31-8-generic kernel.
