Bug Description

The url input and search input fields of the Firefox location bar will show dead (white) pixels for many Gnome themes.

Note the attached screenshot to demonstrate the issue.

Based on a quick test, most themes shipped with Ubuntu are affected.

Ubuntu 9.04
Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042523 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.10
First Screenshot: Dust Sand
Second Screenshot: Darkroom

It looks even worse on the second screenshot. There, you can see a white line around the box. Usually, the white pixels are only in the rounded corners of the box.

Extensions installed:
- default plugin
- demo print
- divx web player
- libnpjp2.so
- quicktime plugin
- shockwave flash
- vlc multimedia
- windows media

Status of extensions:
- for this screenshot, only "default" and "demo print" were enabled

Does it work on default Ubuntu theme?
No, dead white pixels there, as well, but not as noticable due to near-white widget background colour.

Are you using a custom theme?
No, default themes or those installed with Ubuntu packages.

Have a look at this third screenshot (made with default Ubuntu "Human" theme):

The Firefox location box has white pixels with the round corners, the Nautilus location box does not.

My firefox is also affected by this bug. Seems no one else as me and Hanno seems to care though...

I would like to add that the "dead" white pixels are not limited to the url bar, but also afect the rest of the firefox user interface (dialog boxes in the preferences menu,...). So it seems this might be a XUL problem?

This problem still remains in Jaunty. John Vivirito's questions were answered. This bug is not "incomplete" anymore.

Thanks in advance!

This problem still remains in Firefox 3.5 with Karmic (beta version as of oct 13, 2009).

John Vivirito's questions were answered. This bug is not "incomplete" anymore.

Please advice on how to proceed.

Confirming. This was the first bug I immediately noticed in Firefox after upgrading to Karmic (I also noticed it in Jaunty AFAIK), when using the default Human theme. I’m surprised I’m apparently one of the few who has noticed this or has taken the trouble to report it, and that it has already been known for a few months but hasn’t received appropriate attention. i noticed two duplicates of this bug, which I shall mark as such.

I'm kinda stumped on how to get a response beyond #2.

@Hanno I understand your frustration, but just try to be patient. firefox-3.5 alone has >800 open bugs over 450 of which are still new. It is a big, heavily used, and highly user-visible package and so has a large backlog of bugs. Ubuntu is developed mostly by volunteers, and so they have limited time. But the fact that it is developed mostly by volunteers means that you can pitch in too if you want. If anyone wants to, feel free to help triage other firefox bugs so that the backlog can be lowered and the developers can get to this one. Check out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage/ for more info. Your help making Ubuntu better is always appreciated.

That being said, I think this may be a problem with individual themes. I only really see this with Human based themes. Can anyone confirm this on any other themes?

Affects at least the following theme engines (tested):

Crux
Darkroom
Human
Human-Clearlooks

Interestingly, HumanLogin does not appear to be affected.
