Rather, the commands should be:

Thanks, after yet another restart I was able to read your mail! I'll try
it, as I am fairly sure it will happen again ... I had this problem once
before with the previous version of Ubuntu and eventually tried
Evolution (which i don't feel comfortable with.)
I compare your rapid response to a request for help from Microsoft: they
send you a link to the pages you have already searched through and tell
you it must be your machine. ...

Thanks again, I'll get back to you when I've tried out the commands…

regards

Bill George

More than likely this happened either because you double clicked the
launcher, or you closed tbird and restarted it too fast. Please make
sure ps aux | grep thunderbird-bin only shows the grep command, if it
shows something other than grep you need to stop that process. this
should only happen when it is running or restarted too fast.

While I do sometimes forget myself and click too wildly, the problem is
annoying enough for me to pay close attention when trying to read my
mails. And there was no sign of Thunderbird running among the active
programmes.
As the problem also arose at the beginning of sessions, it couldn't be a
question of closing and restarting too soon.
At the moment it seems to be working, so I'll wait and see. Tahnks
anyway for your time.

Please reopen if it happens again, thunderbird by default does not start on startup you have to either set it to start on session startup or you have to start it yourself.
