Bug Description

Binary package hint: xsane

My HP 915 (printer/scanner/copier) worked well on Intrepid and Hardy. After a fresh install of Jaunty jackalope, the device prints, but when I try to scan using xsane, it returns

Failed to open device 'v4l:/dev/video0': Invalid argument.

seemingly detecting my webcam but not the scanner.

sane-find-scanner finds the 915 scanner on USB correctly.
scanimage -L does not work.

(Both the above were tried as root)

I report that I have the same exact problem....ubuntu jaunty, printer works fine but scanner not detected, instead sane detects webcam....hoping that the priority of this bug will be bumped up.

Why is this bug unassigned? Does this mean that the chances of it being taken care of by the time Karmic Koala is out become slimmer? Can someone please check in on it?
Thanks!

To prevent this error, you can comment out the “/dev/video0″ line in /etc/sane.d/v4l.conf.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it. It still doesn't work. I get the message that nothing was detected. Strongly hope the problem will be (or will have been) fixed in karmic. EVERYthing else works or can be made to work....

As of today it seems the problem is yet to be fixed. I'd like to summarize some of what I've collected so far. (Non-expert view).

Some persons using HP printer-scanner-copier devices found the printer working well, but the system not recognizing the scanner. In my & other cases, it was HP-915, first noticed on Ubuntu Jaunty in Apr-May 2009 when the new version of the OS was released.

https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/72096
(This is marked solved but it was not solved.... as you can see)

Other Linux OSs released at the same time also have the same problem. I confirm this for Mandriva 2009 Spring, Debian Lenny, Fedora 11 (all gnome).
http://blog.linuxtoday.com/blog/2009/11/getting-the-sca.html
(another poster on debian: could someone with current Ubuntu or other distros try this out & comment? )

The problem still persists
a)with karmic (ubuntu), Mandriva 2010 (reports on the net)
http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=120797
b)with Fedora 12 (personal experience)
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+question/90048
(but, ok, this person had things working with Jaunty)

If I go back to Intrepid or Hardy the device works perfectly. (am presently on Intrepid for this single reason).

(these gentlemen got things working in a very convoluted way)

And finally, (I think, Important!!!), there's this post right on front of the Xsane webpage (URL below)
http://www.xsane.org/
I have noticed this posting there since Apr 2009 and it's still there. I think the gist is that newer versions of sane are not compatible with sane backends. ( don't remember if I tried this in May 2009. Now, the version of sane-utils on my Intrepid laptop (where scanning is fine) is 1.0.10-6ubuntu1 )

So, putting it together,
1)Many people who were previously fine with their HP printer-scanners have been having problems with (only) scanning since Apr-May 2009 to date.
2)This is a problem with Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Mandriva, since Apr-May 2009.
2)The problem may be with new versions of sane not being compatible with sane-backends (please correct (and forgive) me if my interpretation is wrong.

Now could technically able persons take over, and please help. I hope the above stuff may be useful. I really, really want to have karmic.

Thanks

Is this still an issue with recent Ubuntu releases?
If it is, you should probably get in contact with the sane-devel mailing list at http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/sane-devel because most knowledgeable people will found there...
