Bug Description

Binary package hint: yelp

Problem shows in Jaunty, inkscape 0.46. I attempted to print a file with an embedded SVG drawing and a PNG image. Inkscape attempts to print but returns an error message that the printer may not be connected. I am able to print a test page from the System printers dialog. Printer is an HP 5610.

Not entirely sure if this is a yelp bug or inkscape bug. The bug reporting tool says yelp.

The printing bug that I describe above is most likely a duplicate of bug #361772.

The only odd behavior that may be related to yelp occurs when I shutdown my system. I get a "program is not responding" when I shutdown.

1) Does it only happen with the above mentioned file or also with other files in inkscape? If yes please attach the mentioned file to this bug report. Is Inkscape the only program where you experience printing problems?

2) Please run the following command on a terminal for gathering usefull debugging information:
apport-collect 378432

3) Please provide your cups error_log as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#cupserrorlog after trying to print the mentioned file from inkscape

I'm sorry I tried running the apport-collect command but did not set the permissions appropriately and I am not sure how to fix.

I can print from other programs fine. I can print various other files from Inkscape without issue. The particular file I am working with nearly fills the page and may run over the margins, though that can't be the reason the printer stops. In any event I have attached the cups error log.

BTW, I changed the printer driver to the HP 5600 - no improvement in the problem.

The file that causes the printer to stop. I can print some of the elements of the drawing independently without issue. The large rectangle surrounding the graphics will not print properly independently. It will print two horizontal lines and then shoot the paper out. All together the drawing causes the printer stop and say it is not connected.

Looks like a ghostscript issue.

We still need this the ouput of the following command on a terminal:
apport-collect -p cups 378432

If anything goes wrong please post the output you get from this command.

You have to allow "Change anything" privileges.

I don't know how to change the privileges.

Please run the following workaround provided by lubos in bug #368509 in a terminal:
rm -fr ~/.cache/apport/

then run apport-collect -p cups 378432 command again enter an URL and hit the last button “Change anything” ! Press ENTER and wait...:-)

A pre-release of the upcoming Inkscape 0.47 is now available in Ubuntu
Karmic for testing. Because *so* much stuff has changed compared with
the version you reported your bug against, would you mind re-testing
this new version and see if this bug is now resolved?

Karmic Alpha CD ISO images are available at:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If you're not testing Karmic yet, there are .debs of this new Inkscape
for Jaunty, Hardy, and Intrepid here:

  https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.testers/+archive/ppa

You might find further bugs when testing this alpha release. If that is
the case, please file a NEW bug report here:

   https://edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+filebug

Thanks ahead of time for your testing efforts, and enjoy the new Inkscape!

I was finally able to come back to test this. I tested Inkscape 0.47pre0 r21549, built Jun 12 2009. I know there are newer build versions, but I am not sure how to get them. In any event, I opened up one of my drawings and hit print. The drawing did "print" without any printer stop errors. But the drawing printed as two horizontal lines and the paper shoots out after. My current work around is to save the file as a PDF and open it up in Evince to print. Should I file a new bug report? I would be happy to test a newer build if someone could provide instructions on how to get it.

Updated my system to Koala Karmic and 0.47pre4. The bug appears resolved as I can now print directly from Inkscape with no printer errors.
