Bug Description

I have a problem inputting umlauts into java applications: I discovered it first in OpenOffice, but it seems all java applications are affected: in most software I can type an umlaut, e.g. äëü, by pressin AltGr, then the letter, then ". In java applications nothing appears. I am using a british standard keyboard layout, with kde 3.5 (kubuntu 8.04).

Update: Ive just tried using the terminal: in xterm everything works as expected, using a normal console however doesn't work. Does this mean java is taking raw input, not processed by xorg? If so, how do I modify this?

This bug actually affects all dead key combinations, which work fine on all normal software, but java seems to swallow the dead keys, meaning you cannot input special characters using the keyboard.
