Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

After a recent update to Ubuntu Jaunty I discovered that tables from Word documents were missing.

A search in this bug tracker revealed that there were various bugs concerning WRITING tables in MS-Word format, this one is about READING them.

I updated to the 3.1 version from Launchpad, but the problem remained.

On a 32 bit Jaunty install the same document is read and rendered as expected.

I attach a screenshot from the 64 bit machine.
The two lines of white space between the paragraph markers is where the table is supposed to be. This area can not be selected.

Additional info:
- Description: Ubuntu 9.04
  Release: 9.04
- Linux 2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It seems that a workaround is to do the following:
- hit F5 (which brings up a new window)
- select the table
- right click
- table -> edit (that brings up the table edit dialog)
- set left spacing to 0 (which was modified to 23cm, this is why the table did not show)

This happens with every file that I have in my pc with a table. Unfortunately I can't attach, since it has private phone numbers, sorry

So what are we to do at the office? Is there an official Ubuntu upgrade path for intrepid and jaunty so that I can get rid of this rather horrible bug. Tables are rather essential for us, and having 50% of our employees not being able to read them (because of Ubuntu) is rather sad. :-)
