Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-geode

I had a working AMD Geode LX800 running Ubuntu Gutsy with the "amd" driver, but since I upgraded to Jaunty, and switched to the "geode" driver, my screen has a black margin on the left of the display (about 4cm wide).
I tried playing with the modelines, but nothing seems to change anything.
Note that when using the "vesa" driver, I don't have the black margin problem.
For your information, I'm using a 640x480 resolution on a 5 inches touch screen panel.

Hi julo,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Julien, could you please edit the description of the the bug? It seems that part of the text went missing, so I'm not exactly sure of what the symptoms you are describing are. Thanks!

Sorry Martin-Eric but nothing is missing in the description. As I wrote, there is a black margin about 4 cm-wide on the left of the screen when using the geode driver. If you need more information, just tell me what you need to know.

Could you support a picture to explain the phenomenon?

I made a fake screenshot to demonstrate the problem. It's pretty straightforward, really: there is a 4cm black margin on the left of the screen, as demonstrated on the picture...

Hi, Julien,
1). As you said that the "For your information, I'm using a 640x480 resolution on a 5 inches touch screen panel." What is mean about it? and I saw your xorg.conf file, I suggest try to amend the Section "Screen", see below:

Section "Screen"
 Identifier "Screen0"
 Device "Card0"
 Monitor "Monitor0"
 SubSection "Display"
  Viewport 0 0
  Depth 1
 EndSubSection
 SubSection "Display"
  Viewport 0 0
  Depth 4
 EndSubSection
 SubSection "Display"
  Viewport 0 0
  Depth 8
 EndSubSection
 SubSection "Display"
  Viewport 0 0
  Depth 15
 EndSubSection
 SubSection "Display"
  Viewport 0 0
  Depth 16
 EndSubSection
 SubSection "Display"
  Viewport 0 0
  Depth 24
 EndSubSection
EndSection

BTW: you can reference my attachment file about the xorg.conf. Use this conf reproduce the phenomenon.

2). Now my xf86-video-geode version is 2.11.8, XServer version is 1.7.1, I can't reproduce your phenomenon. If you try to use the latest version, please tell me how to reproduce, I'll follow it.

Thanks,
Hunk Cui

Hi, Julien,
As you said "using a 640x480 resolution on a 5 inches touch screen panel", Can you try to use 800x600 or 1024x768? What is your screen proportion(4:3 or 16:9?) ?

Thanks,
Hunk Cui

Hi Hank,

I'm sorry but I don't have the hardware anymore, so I can't test anything. Just for information, the screen had a 4:3 proportion.

If you can't reproduce it anymore, I suggest to close the bug report, as I can't test anymore.

Thanks.

Hi, Julien,
    I know your mean.
I can reproduce your phenomenon. The 640x480 also can normally display. When I setup to 832x624, it will occur a 4cm black margin on the left of the screen. So I think the mainly reason is the difference between screen panel.

Thanks,
Hunk Cui

Can someone confirm whether 2.11.8-11 or more recent fixes this issue or not?

Hi, Martin,
About this issue, maybe it focus on our geode hardware doesn't not support some special screen resolution, also it need to research in subsequent development.

Thanks,

Noticing how the user no longer has access to the hardware in question, I'll mark this bug as invalid.
