This is a static situation.

To reproduce:
Start xchat-gnome open preferences->scripts and plugins-> notification sounds. (these may be called differently as I have a dutch install)
Then enter a few words that should be highlighted when mentioned in a conversation in the section preferences.

Now there should be played a (ping..) sound every time one of these words occurs in a conversation (i.e your callsign).

In hardy this works fine ( I have one laptop still on hardy), But in Jaunty there is no sound anymore. ( laptop, desktop and netbook).

Not sure if it's an upstream bug as such... it's looking for a wav file that isn't there.

sudo ln -s /usr/share/sounds/question.wav /usr/share/sounds/info.wav

That seems to be a workaround in my case.

Thanks for the report, it has been some time without any response or feedback in this bug report and we are wondering if this is still an issue for you with the latest release of Ubuntu the Natty Narwhal, May you please test with that version and comment back if you're still having or not the issue? Please have a look at http://www.ubuntu.com/download to know how to install that version. Thanks in advance.

This is still a bug for me in Natty and is fixed by Sean's workaround above.
