Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Strange smearing effect for some parts of scene.
glxgears and BZFlag work fine.
Freelancer under Wine, Armagetron Advanced, Adanaxis and Trigger display strange visuals.
Freelancer produces an accumulative glaring of the space background.
Rolling back to the 2.4 intel drivers doesn't improve the situation.

Hi leeguy92,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

I also carried out all of the "Safe" steps here:

The problem existed beforehand.
Doing this did not fix.

IMPORTANT:
The problem doesn't affect armagetron. This was simply a bad setting on my part for that game specifically.
Adanaxis, and Freelancer, however, ARE affected.

There is nothing new in Xorg log after using the affected applications, though adanaxis spits out:
20090419T140356Z: Warning: SDL video mode failed - trying without FSAA
when started.

Strangely, when starting adanaxis in safe mode(adanaxisgpl --safe), it seems to work fine.

I've got this issue, too. Intel GMA X3100.

It also affects Panda3D. Running the tutorial program here[1] gives the same smearing and artifacts.

I also noticed a problem in wings3d, with accumulative texture darkening.

I drew a cube, then put a sphere around it.
I set the sphere material to transparent blue.
If you move your mouse away from the sphere, the opacity seems to accumulate, to the point where cube becomes hidden, and you end up with a blue sphere.

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

I can confirm this is perfectly fine in Karmic alpha 2, is there any chance the drivers can be backported from Karmic to Jaunty for now?

Thanks for letting us know the issue is resolved.

Regarding backports, we post them here: https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates/

We may give a shot to building -intel 2.8.0 for Jaunty once it's released, but a lot of the fixes have been stuff in the kernel which we will not be putting into x-updates.
