I have installed xubuntu 9.04 on a sony vaio pcg-srx87 and can no longer display 1024x768 only 800x600 or 640x480.

Marking as duplicate of 288807. See discussion there. Basically, you need to manually specify the resolution and "Virtual" screen size in xorg.conf because older Sony Vaio displays don't report information correctly.
