This happened while updating the package. Could it be because of excessive strain on RAM or the memory where the packages would be cached

Yeah, errors like this suggest problems such as corrupted packages (corrupted during download or something). Unfortunately there's really nothing we can do on our end to fix this.

Please see the latest comment by 'Sudarshan'. If, it is not possible to reinstall automatically, the bug can be made invalid

Once the packages are broken (because of whatever reason), I think on trying to reinstall them should delete the broken package(s) and try to reinstall. This does not happen. So I will have to remove then through synaptic package manager/ manually. Can the reinstallation be made automatic?

Thanks for your report. This kind of failure is likely due to a corrupted archive, hard drive failure, memory corruption, no space left, ... and need to be handled manually. Closing the report.
