Maxima may require the 686 kernel, but Ubuntu ships with a kernel for 386 as standard. An upgrade, or perhaps downgrade, of the Linux kernel may help you. This is not a bug, this is a user problem. You can also try "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a" and/or "sudo dpkg --clear-avail; sudo apt-get update" and this may also fix your problem.

After taking a second look, looks like I had it backwards. It requires the 386 kernel, whereas you have a 686.

maxima and maxima:i386 are both packages now, and you can install either of them to use maxima-doc.
