Bug Description

The system sleeps via the logout dialog or by enabling sleep on lid close. However, it does not resume.

What it does do on resume is:

> Screen flashes and reponds to the brightness buttons, but does not show any image.

> Mute button lights up, but the volume buttons remain unresponsive

> Wireless Radio Light turns on. However, attempts to ping the last know IP address from a different machine fails.

> Hard Drive Light comes on and stays on

> Keyboard is responsive, Caps lock & Num lock seem to work. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-F7 kills the keyboard.

> Fan does not turn on.

Laptop details are found here:

Please let me know what other details I can provide. Thanks!

Does kernel release mean 2.6.16 (dapper+1?) or 2.6.15-21 in Dapper?

My current kernel is 2.6.15-20-686.

Currently, things are already looking better. The laptop now resumes, but the screen remains blank, though the backlight is on. I was able to ssh into the laptop over the wireless network connection, after resume. I could not find the magic command line to resume the screen, however.

Apart from recent upgrades within Dapper, I have disabled the SD card slot in the laptop's bios, as it remains unsupported in the kernel.

Yes! It is now working.

A quick glance through the logs shows that there are now [resume] Radeon events in Xorg.0.log which were not there before.

I am using Gnome Power Manager and have it set to sleep on lid close. In order to resume, I need to touch the power button, as it does not simply resume on lid open.

~$ sudo rmmod vesafb resolved the issue for me, now using Ubuntu 7.04, Feisty Fawn. I will test it with my old Dapper installation shortly.

I discovered this after following the steps on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

The ¨hash matches device" result I got did not make any sense, but the system did disable the splash screen on next boot, leading me to suspect an issue with the frame buffer.

On Dapper, added nosplash (in place of splash) to the grub menu. Resume from sleep then works, though the scren flashes some weird colours while resuming.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
