vol_id has been dropped in 9.10, blkid is used instead. Concerning unetbootin, see #384369.

I've fixed this as of upstream release 356, Debian unstable should have a package soon (which will fix this bug in the Ubuntu package once it's imported into karmic).

How exactly should the fix work?

After breaking my upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10, unetbootin (and all prerequisite packages) was not installed.
I installed the package manually, but still the same error (vol_id not found) occures.
