trash shows empty but also claims has 1 item in it

as you can see when i hover the mouse over the garbage can it says there is 1 item in it.
i think this occured after i deleted some files from a ext3 external hard drive, i emptied the trash then properly unmounted it and shut it off.
ubuntu 9.04 32bit

after a few reboots and [deleting a few more files / clearing the trash a few times] it is finally acting correctly
