OpenOffice Impress slide show on monitor 2 flickers when using applications on monitor 1

Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-impress

I'm displaying a slideshow from OpenOffice Impress on monitor 2 and keeping other applications open on monitor 1 in an "extended desktop" mode. When I click on menus on applications on monitor 1, the image on monitor 2, showing the slide show, flickers in a rather ugly fashion. This happens with several makes of monitor 2 including a Sony projector and a Dell LCD screen. Before 9.04 I only used ATI native drivers and I didn't have this problem so I really suspect a driver bug but I'm guessing.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 on a Compac nc8430 w/ Radeon Mobility X1600. OpenOffice.org package 1:3.0.1-9ubuntu3.

I'm using the open driver, guess it is "ati". I don't think the ATI
native (fglrx?) is supposed to work on my gfx board after 8.10.

Hi arto-jarvinen-letter,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Sorry for not adding this info up front: I now realize that because of an other problem with the driver (flickering cursor, #320771), I am running xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.12.99+git20090625.96581746-0ubuntu0tormod_i386 and xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.12.99+git20090625.96581746-0ubuntu0tormod_i386 instead of the released versions (as per instructions in that other bug report).

Anyway, here's my Xorg.0.log too. Hope this helps!

A new version of the -ati driver is now available in Karmic.

This is a significant update to -ati which brings in kernel mode-setting
(currently disabled) and scores of fixes for DRI2, EXA, etc.

I've posted the new version of this driver to the following PPA,
would you mind testing it and seeing if it resolves the bug you
reported?

  https://edge.launchpad.net/~bryceharrington/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/709908/+listing-archive-extra

If you're not running this release of Ubuntu, you can try booting the Karmic
LiveCD and loading the PPA onto it, and then log out/in to restart X.
ISOs are available at http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/

After testing Karmic, report back here whether it's still an issue or not,
and if it is please post a fresh Xorg.0.log and 'dmesg' output.

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug xorg'.
