Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

I'm trying to use network manager to connect to the internet via a Treo 700wx with Verizon. I've added a configuration for it under the "Mobile Broadband" tab of "Edit Connections...". When I plug in the phone with the modem link enabled, network manager doesn't give me an option to connect via it. The output of dmesg shows the phone connecting:

[11574.304144] usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 41
[11574.483487] usb 5-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[11574.489200] ipaq 5-2:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
[11574.491543] usb 5-2: PocketPC PDA converter now attached to ttyUSB0

(Note: In order to get that to show up I had to manually load the ipaq module: `$ sudo modprobe ipaq vendor=0x045e product=0x0079`. I got that suggestion from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1023543. The phone showed up in lsusb with the same IDs as shown on that forum post.)

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release the Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Don't expire this, instead please fix it. Network-manager doesn't see modems anymore and tethered phones present as modems. This is a regression.

I see that mobile broadband is a tab in network-manager, except there is no way to specify the device to use, and apparently it also ignores modems.

NetworkManager used to detect most phones I connected to my PC, so I could use them as Mobile Broadband modems. But today, after updating the system, they are not recognized by NetworkManager anymore. The kernel detects the device correctly and ttyACM0 is added. I can communicate with the phones using AT commands without problem.
