Maybe, workaround exists?

Have you tried installing binary drivers from Intel?

Warzone requires hardware OpenGL acceleration, which some drivers may not support.

From what I read on Phoronix Canonical really did screw up the Intel driver experience for Jaunty, resulting in poor performance and numerous problems.

Since everyone having Intel is running Jaunty with an Intel card (cards which are known to work under other distributions) I'll bet this is the problem.

The 'Intel' bit is a giveaway. This is as much a problem with the Intel drivers having poor OpenGL support as it is with Ubuntu making poor driver choices for 9.04.

This is NOT a problem with Warzone -- and these is little that we developers can do about it. The problems are with the Intel drivers.

Maybe you could persuade the Ubuntu developers to add Warzone to their QA/test suite. Just because a set of drivers will run compiz and glxgears does not mean that it is release-worthy ;)

That would be a good point EvilGuru if Warzone worked in previous Ubuntu versions, or if other games exhibited similar problems.

For me, Warzone works well with Ubuntu 8.10 . After 3 months of wait for updates.
So ubuntu 9.04 is too young.
I had the same problem with Ubuntu 8 in the beginning.
That's the thing that I know about this game.
It's not a problem with Warzone, but with opengl for me.
It work only if disable the compiz and the Desktop effect in ubuntu 8.10.
There are other games who needs the desactivation of Desktop effects, but the list is off topic.
