Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi,

with a fresh installed Jaunty and all patches as of today I cannot get a network connection via my builtin Sierra card. pppd starts, but terminates after a second or two. syslog says:

May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: Using interface ppp0
May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyUSB2
May 10 11:34:26 lulu NetworkManager: <info> (ttyUSB2): device state change: 5 $
May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: CHAP authentication succeeded
May 10 11:34:26 lulu pppd[4006]: CHAP authentication succeeded
May 10 11:34:26 lulu NetworkManager: <info> (ttyUSB2): device state change: 6 $
May 10 11:34:26 lulu kernel: [ 472.324577] PPP BSD Compression module register$
May 10 11:34:26 lulu kernel: [ 472.341746] PPP Deflate Compression module regi$
May 10 11:34:27 lulu pppd[4006]: Modem hangup
May 10 11:34:27 lulu pppd[4006]: Connection terminated.

This is on a dual boot system (Intrepid/Jaunty). Using Intrepid I can connect to the net via Sierra without probs, so hardware, account data etc. are fine.

Looking for existing bugs I checked for /var/run/console/root but there was no such file.

Please tell me what additional debug info is needed.

Kind regards

Gerd

This also happening for me using a Sierra AirCard 860 PCMCIA card. Could this patch:

http://www.nabble.com/Mobile-Broadband--%3E-Disconnect-option-broken--td23380575.html

be related?

This modem worked fine pre-9.04 and works fine under XP.

See attached capture of /var/log/messages /var/log/daemon.log.

It seems like NM is not waiting long enough for PPPD to fully connect.

Anybody know what NM version (if any) I can revert back to?

Is there an option for NM to fully enable logging in the PPPD it spawns?

I got latest patches and then updated /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf as suggested.

No luck here. Nothing seems to have changed:

I seem to be having the same problem with an internal sierra usb card. It used to work, but now it doesn't since a few days. Oddly, it *does* work with a sim card for another account with the same provider, but not for my account (even tried getting a new sim card for that account). My guess is that it is some sort of timeout because the response time on the provider side has become slower for my account for some reason (my account does work on windows with a huawei modem).

I would like to try to make pppd or NetworkManager a bit more patient (whichever might help), but I can't find any settings to this effect anywhere.

I did also modify my /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf as suggested about, but that did not help. I think that's a fix for the failure of dbus when there is a root window open.

I booted same machine to XP and symptoms were the same. One sim card worked and the other not. Turns out I needed to update the modem firmware (it's an MC8790 on a FS T5010, go the firmware from Fujitsu). It now works for both cards.

I just replaced my Jaunty test installation with current Karmic Alfa 6.
My builtin UMTS now works ootb without any configuration (as it does in
my productive Intrepid).

Thanks
