Bug Description
Summery posted first, real usecase/bug report below. This is on a fully patched Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix on the Dell Mini 9.
1) UNR comes up on the wrong screen.
2) There's no way to get it to move to the right screen.
3) It defaults to popping up everything on top of itself, even when there's a better option.
4) Its a PITA to get it to the better option.
5) Once I want to multitask, I I lose everything again for no good reason.
After reading bug#158415, I understand some of the technical difficulties of getting hotplugging right with the drivers, but userspace is seriously fucked too. I've got a Dell Mini 9, with its "cute" 1024x600 resolution. Meanwhile, I've got a monitor capable of driving 1280x1024, which I plug in (VGA). After the the intel driver requires me to log out, (but really it means reboot, otherwise nothing happens, I switch to VT, and get garbage) I log in and the circus begins.
I've dragged my monitors to have my built-in display below the "real" monitor, because that's how they're physically laid out. So upon logging in I'm greeted with a MASSIVE 1280x1024 netbook-launcher, and 1024x600 of blank space below it. Then I launch epiphany. Which, (SURPRISE!) pops up OVER the netbook launcher, leaving me with 1280x1024 of epiphany, and still 1024x600 of nothing below. After struggling for a few minutes to get UNR to the bottom I give up and spend a few more to realize that I have to rightclick the PANEL to unmaximize epiphany (because I can't just move it -- move doesn't do anything but unmaximize my window, follow my mouse and gives up before getting close to the built in). Then I drag it down, reposition it so that I can actually see my window controls, and then hit maximize and wine up with the attached monstrosity.
Despite the fact that my layout is the exact opposite of what I want, I deal with it to submit this report, and realize that I might need to gimp the screenshot I took, so I go back up to UNR (which is unconfigurably massive) and click on the graphics tab, AND EPIPHANY DISAPPEARS once again leaving me with a monitor on the bottom filled with nothing. How cute, its been minimized to the top of a different monitor so that its not blocking what's not underneath it.
This is complete failure (and one of the reasons I'm scared about Gnome 3.0).
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
