Bug Description

Binary package hint: envyng-core

Using Ubuntu 8.04.2 Server
Graphics card - nvidia geforce 7050 610i
Video driver - 173.14.12

The update manager reported that a new kernel package was available for my server kernel 2.6.24-24.

Graphics was working fine on 2.6.24-23 (total regret upgrading... this troubleshooting was not on my todo list :( )

I had original installed nVidia drivers with EnvyNG. Worked like a champ. Compiz and all.

Now when I boot, I get a window saying that I am in low graphics mode. I have tried many things but have not been able to resolve including removing and reinstalling via envyng. Reverting through grub doesn't help either.

In the Xorg.0.log file i see near the top that it is using xorg.conf.failsafe instead of my xorg.conf. Following a troubleshooting suggestion, I forced the system to use the xorg.conf file and output the log to a file which is attached. The key thing seems to be that the chipset is unknown when it should be. Here is the line from the log file:
(--) PCI:*(0:16:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x07e3) rev 162, Mem @ 0xfd000000/24, 0xd0000000/28, 0xfc000000/24, BIOS @ 0xfeb40000/17

I have attached debugging logs.

Love to get the fixed... Being stuck in 800x600 blows. Please help.
Thanks

Anybody? I am wondering if i need to buy a graphics card. I can't even get it to work with the open source driver. It is like the card has just dropped out of the database... Can I manually add it back in somewhere? Come on folks, throw me a bone...

I have the same problem. This seems to be some glitch in 2.6.24-24. The nvidia module fails to load. My solution is to back up to 2.6.24-23, which works fine for my nvidia card, a GeForce 7300 LE.

I consider this a bug. I wonder if anyone is paying attention.

I'm running 10.04 (presently kernel 2.6.32-38-generic but the newest one is installing now) and the latest NVidia driver (VIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 285.05.09 Fri Sep 23 17:31:57 PDT 2011). Through several kernel updates and several driver updates over the last six months at least, whenever a new kernel comes by the system wants to drop to safe mode. I found that if I 'exit to console', then re-run the NVidia driver installer as root, the problem is fixed until next time.

A possibly related piece of info: whenever I log in, I get a message that says "the X server does not support the resolution requested". But everything proceeds to work fine. I'm running dual 1680x1050 monitors.

This package has been removed from Ubuntu. It has been superceeded by the jockey package, so if you still have the same problem on 12.04 or later with jockey, please reassign the bug there.
