Bug Description

Kernel installation may fail due to a bad CD. We should improve the error message to take account of this, as has been done elsewhere in the installer.

Please attach /var/log/installer/syslog to this bug. You'll need to use root privileges to get at that file. Thanks.

Your CD drive is failing to read your CD, perhaps because either the drive or the disk needs cleaning. The installer should present this error more clearly.

Dirty CD-ROM drive produces a bunch of errors that don't seem to be related at first. Installing on 30 computers with dirty CD-drives, I got at least error messages related to kernel, failed base system and failed package installation.

When drives are just dirty, they often work by trying the failed step again. Maybe the installer could try it a bit harder (bug #34747). Super nice would be to try downloading from the internet when CDROM fails.
