The way the branch vocabulary works and the BranchCollection.search method are a little messy, and could do with some clean up.

It's actually causing time-outs like in bug 793830 (and duplicates).

I'm going to make bug 793830 the master here - this is (as mwhudson says on bug 496041) a bit vague.
