Bug Description

Binary package hint: ecryptfs-utils

Happened on Ubuntu 9.04, right at the end of the install process. 64-bit version, normal install disc.

(I realise this is most likely a dupe; if so, I'm sorry, but I'm playing it safe by reporting nonetheless...)

I'm using the installed system in question as I type. More problems have arisen that I suspect originate from this bug.

I am able to update just fine, however I get an error at the end. (I'll post this when I update again.)

Running 'sudo apt-get install -f' results in this:

chris@chris-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install -f
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Correcting dependencies... failed.
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
computer-janitor: Depends: python-fstab (>= 1.2) but it is not installed
ecryptfs-utils: Depends: libkeyutils1 but it is not installable
keyutils: Depends: libkeyutils1 but it is not installable
libecryptfs0: Depends: libkeyutils1 but it is not installable
libkrb53: Depends: libkeyutils1 but it is not installable
ubuntu-desktop: Depends: evince but it is not installed
Segmentation fault

In Synaptic, trying to "fix broken packages" results in this error:

E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
E: Unable to correct dependencies

So instead, I use the "broken" filter to locate them, and mark all for reinstallation. I click "apply", and it spits this back at me:

Could not apply changes!
Fix broken packages first.

I have no idea why this happened, but I thought I'd report it.

Error upon starting Update Manager:

"Could not initialise the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package information.

Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message:

'E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.'"

Odd, seeing as I was previously able to update. This seems very odd, so I'll just go for a reinstall...

After attempting a reinstall, I got the error again: this time, however, I checked /var/log/syslog, and found this little gem:

"May 7 17:40:31 ubuntu ubiquity: Removing ecryptfs-utils ...
May 7 17:40:31 ubuntu ubiquity: ERROR: Cannot remove ecryptfs-utils, as it appears to be in use:
May 7 17:40:31 ubuntu ubiquity: [/home/chris/.ecryptfs]
May 7 17:40:31 ubuntu ubiquity: dpkg: error processing ecryptfs-utils (--purge):
May 7 17:40:31 ubuntu ubiquity: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1"

That would make sense; that directory does indeed exist, AFAIK. I'll try deleting it; however, this bug still applies, and results in a very broken system.

(I also have screenshots of every GUI error, in case anyone is interested)
