Shortly after upgrading to Jaunty (9.04) the left click on my laptop stopped working. It worked for a few days, then failed, interestingly enough. When Jaunty starts, it opens a drag-window, as if left is being held down. Could that be the issue?
The left click works OK on an Intrepid live CD, so I've reinstalled Intrepid (8.10) on a new partition. It starts with a similar drag-window, but cancelling that allows the mouse to work properly.
It's clear I'm not alone in the odd mouse isses here. The following look to me like they might all be related to this problem.

In my various researches I've found some references to Compiz causing these kind of problems, but as far as I know I do not use Compiz....

It turns out it was my touchpad dying, I think. I am using Jaunty successfully for everything now having turned it off.
I got a clue when, having gone back to Intrepid, after about 10 days of correct mouse usage I started getting random left clicks all over the place. I guessed it was probably the touchpad, and sure enough when I turned it off my trackpoint and buttons worked just fine.
Switching across to Jaunty and turning off the touchpad solved my problem there, and I'm even confident enough to be using it as the sole OS.
It's still odd that there was a difference between the two versions of Ubuntu, however. I also think I had an inkling that this was going on before, as when I turned on the computer in either OS it often initially brought up drag-boxes. That and the fact that I could make other left click options work temporarily did make me wonder if the trackpad was acting as if it was holding down left click all the time. I thought I'd investigated it, but if I did it clearly wasn't very thoroughly.
Either way, you can probably close this, if anyone is even interested.
I'm experiencing a similar problem on my laptop. Its a lenovo thinkpad t61. Left click randomly (random boot-ups) stops working. This affects both on touch-pad and "mouse" button.
However, a few times I have booted from a live xbuntu cd (9.04), and those times it has worked fine (although, since the problem is stochastic, this could be by chance).
The problems started some weeks ago under jaunty. But yesterday, I did a clean install with karmic and the problem still remains. Since the problem has gradually became more frequent it appears that it may be the touch-pad wearing out, but the computer is only 1 1/2 years old, and restarting Xorg generally fixes the problem (if not, another killall Xorg will do it). And once a session is running ok, it will stay ok until Xorg is started the next time.
How to proceed? Which information should I gather?
