Bug Description

Hi,
I've just upgrade Ubuntu to 9.04 version and I found a problem in playing films. When I play AVI file in any of Mplayer or Movie player, the window (not the whole screen) changes the colour and system crashes immediately afterwards. It is possible sometimes to open Avi but not to load subtitles, or enter full screen, or do anything because if I touch the right mouse button, the same thing happens.
Without loading any film both programs work properly.
I've never experienced similar problem with the old version of Ubuntu, so I think that's 9.04 specific.
What should I do?
Thank you in advance!!!
Natalija

Natalija, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

(1) "system crashes" -- the whole system, or just MoviePlayer?
(2) Natalija, can you provide us with the AVI (if it is not copyrighted/restricted access)?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

All movie clips (.wmv , .mpg ) played without problem using Mplayer in Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10
After upgrade to 9.04 no movie clips played.
Mplayer would briefly open and then close spontaneously after about 1 second.
No error message would be reported.
The behaviour was consistent and reproducible.

This happened on all devices in this office. 5 using Desktop edition and 1 with Server edition.
All are standard 32bit pentium 2 machines

The same (very similar behaviour) was observed with other media players:
Gnome Mplayer, SMPlayer, Enqueue in SMPlayer

Experimenting; we uninstalled then re-installed Mplayer on one device
Now the sound only plays but there is no video. Again on all media players.
Initially on file open, a large panel opens as tho the movie were going to play then it spontaneously reduces to the size it would be if the file were a sound-only file. This happens about 1 second after the sound begins to play.

Again the behaviour is very similar for all players for both MPEG and WMV clips.

This bug is reproducible. I really don't know how to recreate this bug, since i did nothing as far as I know. Computer restarts immediately after loading any avi file. Also, I tried with .mpg and .wmv and the same thing happens as described in TMIT World message.
It is exactly the same if I use xine or Mplayer.

It might be a graphic card issue, can you post the content of lspci ?

Natalija and TMIT World,

Is it possible for you to attach one of these affected movie clips to this bug report?

It would go a long way toward resolving the bug.

If this is not possible, please let us know anyway.

So wnutt,

You confirm this behavior for "Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics
Controller (rev 02)"?

My problem is more like TMIT World's rather than the original post. Here are my steps to recreate.

Double click on the file or right click and select play with.
The media player opens and instead of playing the file as expected it closes without any error message.

I have recreated this with Movie Player,VLC, and MPlayer. I have also tried to open Movie Player then going to the "open" option under the "Movie" menu in Movie player with the same effects.

I have tried this with multiple .avi and .wmv files that work fine on other computers.

re John Haitas - request to attach a movie clip

The problem is the same for ALL movie clips of ALL types. We have tested this on multiple devices - both server and desktop edition. It is true for both fresh installs on a new machine as well as upgrade installs.
All the movie clips tested work fine on MS Windows (we only have one MS machine). All files work fine on machines with version 8.10 that we have not upgraded yet and used to work fine on 8.04

FWIW - the first frame of the movie clip appears as a thumbnail when put on the desktop.

We doubt it will help but here is one file.
