intermittent wlan wireless not found on Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

on jaunty jackalope 9.04, with kernel 2.6.28-11-generic running, wlan can not be found or even be found periodically. driver is running, but wlan is not stable. wlan is available if using e.g. kernel 2.6.27-13-generic. it don't matter if using network-manager or wicd.

hardware: chipset intel 3945abg on laptop DELL inspiron 9400 superb

Thanks for reporting this bug. Is this an intermittent failure or is it completely non functional, as I can't understand which you mean. Can you connect to any wifi networks? Are you using specific encryption? Does the stability issue change when you use a non-encrypted connection? Also can you provide us with the following please:

1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

the wlan itself is working. about 10 min ago, when i started my computer. i had signal strength of about 77%. after restarting the computer, again no wlan could be found. and i just use WEP-encryption. i get wlan again when sitting right besides the wlan-modem-router in about 3m of distance.

here is uname -a:

as you see, i use now kernel 2.6.28-12-generic, but with this it is alle the sam as with 2.6.28-11-generic

Thanks for the additional info. So the wifi/wlan works perfectly every time you boot, and only fails after a reboot?

no. you can not reproduce it. sometimes it woks, but most of cases it don't. i can refresh networks in wicd and no wlan can be found. normally when i boot, network connects to wired network because no wlan can be found. even on reboots its about a percentage of less than 10 that my wifi can connect to my wlan. it seems that my laptop lost a lot of signal strength to connect to my wlan. i didnt have had these problems since ubuntu 7.10 and they came up with upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 with new kernel. it even didnt work with ndiswrapper and wifi-driver from windows. i have had the same problems. but i get connection to my wlan when taking my laptop and placing it in about 3m distance of my wlan-router. well, it seems as it lost a lot of connectivity-strength, like when cutting the antenna (what i did not).

So basically, it works better from a distance than up close? Perhaps the signal is being swamped by RFI? Are there any other routers/PCs in wifi range? Have you tried changing to a lower channel, as lower frequency gives better performance at longer distances. Thanks.

no, the other way: in only works close to the router than from distance where my place to work is. and there are no other routers or pc in wifi range. and i also tried other channels but didn't got things better. i don't really think that there is a hardware problem as it used to work since 7.04 out of the box and i didn't change the place of the router or anything else that could cause this problem. it came up with upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04. may be i should try out a fresh install? could it be the upgrade-procedure that anything could be wrong now? the devil is in detail and sometimes hard to find.

It's doubtful that an upgrade will cause this kind of issue, although if it worked in Intrepid, there must be a reason. Can you try enabling the proposed updates and upgrade to the 28-12 kernel, and report back if this helps the issue? Thanks.
