Sorry - didn't realise this was unclear.

From the "Clock Preferences" dialogue, add a location (e.g T'ai-pei Shih), and then try to change the name (e.g. to 台北市, or just Taipei). Note: the location chosen doesn't matter.

Changing the "Location Name" and then clicking "Okay" has no noticeable effect whatsoever.

Thanks!

the name is supposed to describe a weather station

fair enough. under intrepid I was able to change the name of the location to something more meaningful. in this particular case all I wanted to do was change the orthography of the name.

I've just discovered I can get round it by creating a new location with my desired name, and then copying the lat. and long. information from the original entry. it's a fiddly process and I fell foul of (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/304082), but it amounts to doing what I wanted, so I'm happy.

Hmm. On reflection, the workaround I described does work, cumbersome though it is, but it seems I can't get weather information for this location now. I guess the lat. and long. values aren't sufficient for it to work out that it's the same place.

This is only a small bug, but I do think it *is* a bug, since it represents a regression from functionality which worked in Intrepid, Hardy etc....

the bug seems rather a feature request to display an another name that the weather station one, should be sent to the software writters on bugzilla.gnome.org since the ubuntu team will not work on this change in an ubuntu specific way

So this is a bug right? Regression.
Or was this feature purposely removed by the developers?

Here is a workaround.

~$ gconf-editor

Go to:
/apps/panel/applets/clock_screen0/prefs/cities and edit the key.
On the 'Edit Key' window you will see values for your cities, select the one you want to change and click 'Edit'.

Here is a before and after example of my string.
Before:
<location name="Shannon" timezone="Europe/Dublin" latitude="52.700001" longitude="-8.916667" code="EINN" current="true"/>

After:
<location name="Galway" timezone="Europe/Dublin" latitude="52.700001" longitude="-8.916667" code="EINN" current="true"/>

So basically just change the name of the location. After doing this the name shows what I want it to show and it is still updating the weather.
Note: Make sure the city was added first the normal way using the location name which is auto-populated with supported weather locations. Just chose a location near to you.

Ahh, a simple workaround, thanks Daniel! (and thanks too to Pedro for upstreaming this)

The workaround I posted before still needs to be applied to 9.10. With a small difference:

The string changed a bit, now it comes in the form of:
Before:
<location name="" city="Shannon" timezone="Europe/Dublin" latitude="52.700001" longitude="-8.916667" code="EINN" current="true"/>

After:
<location name="Galway" city="Shannon" timezone="Europe/Dublin" latitude="52.700001" longitude="-8.916667" code="EINN" current="true"/>
