Bug Description

NOTE: I am using two different removable hard drives on the same AMD XP3200 based computer which included two working DVD players. On one hard drive I am using Ubuntu 8.10 and on the other Ubuntu 9.04. Other than the two different hard drives the hardware configuration is identical.

When inserting a movie DVD in either of the two DVD players Ubuntu 9.04 performs a plugin search for Movie Player but yields no packages available and thus any attempt to play a movie DVD results in an error.

The same movie DVD playes fine on both DVD devices under Ubuntu 8.10.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

I tested this bug sequence today and I confirm what the reporter is saying.

I took 9.04 Final and applied all avail updates thru 5.1.09 and inserted DVD movie
and got the exact results. Did not test 8.10.

The sequence in screen shots is attached. The procedure says is it looking for
a pluging named 'DVD source', I apt-cache searched all DVD and source patterns
and nothing matches with name 'plugin' etc. nothing matched or came close.

As it is Totem out of the box does not play videos and cannot find the right plugin(s)

I will run apport-collect next

I don't agree with Sebastien about de importance=low, for newbie users the fact of having a dvd drive but not be able to watch movies is very unpleasant.

that's a duplicate that not like the setting were of any use there, and DVD playing is something which is difficult to get working on a free system due to codec and patents for DVD decoding

Thanks for the reply Sebastien, but what I want to mean is that the process shouldn't fail in a final release of the system.
