Bug Description

Sorry if i selected the wrong package but this is a bug in general with Ubuntu that so far has not been solved in Dapper Flight 5.

Basically my CPU does not display in Gnome device manager and when using the BOINC client for distributed computing the benchmarks for my CPU are FAR lower than those in windows. A typical work unit in BOINC under windows on my machine is estimated to take 1200 hrs. Under Ubuntu it is set to take 5000+ hrs!

A clear sign that ubuntu does not recognise/use my CPU properly.

Hi, thanks for your bug report but it isn't really helpful. Could you please attach more information about your processor and motherboard?

The problem: debian installer does not choose the right optimized kernel for the given CPU type.

I don't see it drafted any where as a goal so I'm changing it to wishlist. You can install linux-image-686 or linux-image-k7 depending on your architecture.

I'm sorry, but we don't have room for the extra optimised kernels on our single-CD releases; we decided that it was more important to provide extra language support. As Olafur says (more or less), you can install linux-686 or linux-k7 after installation, or else install from one of our DVD images which will install the optimised kernels automatically.

sorry did i not make it clear?

I have installed the right kernal it doesn't recognised the chip. Only Dapper Flight 5 has so far helped me use ubuntu as Breezy was screwed on my machine.

It's a Shuttle SD31P with Intel 945G chipset and the CPU is a Pentium D 3.0Ghz

Sorry but i think this is more than wish list! This is a fundamental issue that is preventing me from installing ubuntu properly.

In that case, the people talking about optimised kernels conflated this issue with a different bug. This must be a kernel bug.

thanks colin - there is definately a kernal bug though it has existed right through from 5.10 to this Flight 5.

Flight 5 solved the issues with the HD controller as the HD light on my machine was constantly on however the CPU issue remains.

If you require more info tell me what you need and how i can get it for you (not new to linux but not that advanced)

I just want to add a comment that BOINC on Windows is compiled with different compilers and unfortunately Linux version is really slower, might be caused by this.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.
