Bug Description

Binary package hint: notify-osd

I had a notification bubble (indicating that the volume has been muted) that would not go away. However, it would still go transparent on mouse-over. After another event triggered a notification bubble, the "sound-muted" bubble went away in a timely manner.

I muted the volume (using my hardware keys on my laptop) during boot the instant that I heard the login sound. The notification bubble didn't show up for some time (as expected since my computer was still booting up).

(If someone can confirm this bug, then) I recommend this bug be of lowest priority since you can get the bubble to go away by causing another notification bubble.

1) Ubuntu 9.04

2) notify-osd version:
tyson@tyson-netbook:~$ apt-cache policy notify-osd
notify-osd:
  Installed: 0.9.11-0ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.9.11-0ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.11-0ubuntu3 0
        500 http://astromirror.uchicago.edu jaunty/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What I expected to happen:
Since my system was still booting, I didn't expect to even see the notification bubble for muting my volume. I do not mind if notification bubbles are displayed for events which happen during boot, but I expect them to go away in a timely manner, just as they would for events which happen after booting is finished.

4) What happened instead:
A notification bubble did not go away until another notification bubble was created (for another event).

Also, the bubble was partially on top of the main Gnome panel, probably because the bubble was rendered before the panel was and bubbles are not supposed to move.

How long did you wait for the initial "Volume Muted" bubble to disappear before you considered it to be faulty (more than 3 seconds)?

With your "system booting" you actually mean the GNOME-desktop starting after login (autologin)?

When you mute your volume on desktop-startup the "Volume Muted" bubble always stays visible (is that behaviour deterministic)?

Bender2k14, please answer the questions I stated in https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/369915/comments/3 for better investigation. Thanks in advance!

I waited several minutes. It was there the almost the whole time that I wrote this bug report. It only disappeared after I triggered another event.

After I logged in, I tried to mute my system as soon as I heard the Ubuntu login sound. So, yes, by mean the GNOME loading.

I don't have time right now to try to make it happen again. Since it is probably a race condition, I didn't have time at the end of the semester to troubleshoot the problem. School is over now, so I can try to reproduce it, but not for a few hours.

I tried twice more to reproduce this bug and was successful both times. The first time the bubble over lapped the main GNOME panel and the second time, it was in "the correct location", which is where I normally see the notification bubbles appear.

I have not triggered another notification yet, so the bubble indicating that I muted the volume is still there and has been there for over ten minutes.

I also have this problem with Ubuntu 9.10 FINAL. The NetworkManager-notification about an established connection on my wired network does not disappear!

Same thing here. Using 9.10 final. Baloons for network activity and panel lighting appear and disappear in a distracting manner but only go away for good after a few minutes (5 or more).

Is there still no solution for this? I currently have to stop the notify-osd process altogether since it uses 70-90% of my processor constantly, and it also causes problems when using the scroll bar on applications, highlighting text, watching videos full screen, changing the volume (I can't.), not to mention it is opaque and so blocks out that whole part of the screen. The more notifications that pop up, stay up, so I can have a whole 1/4 of the screen blocked at some points...

if a solution exists, please give me a link.

thanks.

I should add - unlike esperanc above me, mine doesn't go away.

could you also describe how to trigger the bug?

I don't know about Lucid, but I no longer have this bug in Karmic.

Back in Jaunty, I triggered this bug by preforming an action that causes a notification bubble (such as muting sound) during boot while the login sound is playing (which is before the Gnome panel is rendered).

closing the bug since that works correctly in newer versions
