Bug Description

For a good number of times, whenever I reboot using GNOME's reboot GUI options, after the splash screen appears at shutdown, system is stuck in a black screen. I do not know if it will shut down eventually but whenever it happens, after waiting for about 30 seconds, I just force shutdown my machine.

I do not know if this happens to shut down too, though. I rarely shut down.
Can you run the following command and post the output to this bug
   aptitude search restricted

I want to see what restricted modules you have installed

thanks

I'm not sure on the package concerning this.

This never happened to me in versions previous to Jaunty.

ProcEnviron:

Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic x86_64

Next time this happens, can you switch to a text console by hitting ctrl-alt-F1, log in there, and then run "sudo poweroff" and see if the machine will come down?

If it won't then running "top" might tell you what the machine is stuck on.

Hey I'm having the same problem, both with a restart and a shut down. I don't know if the original author has given you all the details you need so when I get home tonight I will post the results of what you asked for. Thanks.

That's not a gnome-session bug if you're getting as far as usplash. Could you please boot without "quiet" and "splash" and observe the last messages that appear on the console when you shutdown from your graphical session.

Hello, I had the same problem with Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 running kernel 2.6.28-11-generic.
I have now installed the mainline kernel 2.6.29 from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/.
Since then, I haven't experienced the problem any more. So maybe it's a issue of the current ubuntu kernel, which will hopefully disappear in comming versions.

Would you be able to provide the information I requested above?
Otherwise the problem won't be fixed in coming versions ;)

Thanks

It seems to be the driver for my ethernet card that is causing the problem. I am using a Realtek RTL8111/8168B. I had to go through certain steps to 'blacklist' the driver that was being recognized in Ubuntu and make it use the driver for 8168 instead of using the RTL8169 driver. After I disabled the driver I had installed the shut down seemed to go fine. I have only had time to test this once though. Anyone else have the same ethernet card?
