Bug Description

The Synaptics pad in my laptop has a 4-directional button instead of a scroll wheel or sroll area. Clicking it up, down, left or right should scroll in the appropriate direction, and so it did in Breezy.

However, in Dapper, the scroll button's functionality has gone, to be replaced with the following responses:

Clicking up achieves nothing

Clicking down does the same as clicking the right button

Clicking left seems to work as the middle button (whatever was selected last is pasted at the cursor location)

Clicking right or up work SOMEWHAT like the left mouse button: Single click moves cursor, opens menu and executes option in menu BUT does not open folder in desktop or Nautilus window (though left-click or single tap do); double click selects word, but does not open folder either; triple click does select line.

I've gone through a couple updates of this package in Dapper, but the problem remains. I thought it had been reported, but now I have not found the filed bug, so here it is. Hope it is not too tough to fix!

Ho-hum ... I've found the problem, and maybe it is fixed by now.

It is the DETECTION of the Synaptics pad that failed when installing Ubuntu, so the pertinent entry was not present in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The pad was working through the PS2 driver, which explains the problems.

Copying the Synaptics section from the Breezy partition fixed the issue. Now, I don't know whether it would fail to be detected at installation time as of today.
