Bug Description

Using a fresh installation of 9.04 with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, when running Google Earth after 5-10sec, screen turns black and system crashes. I need to reboot the computer with power button. Looks like to be a graphics problem with the new ATI Open Source Drivers.

** Seems to be intermittent, after a few reboot, Google earth is working for now. We can maybe close the bug, maybe it's on google side.

Same behavior with ati 9250 on jaunty. Not seeing anything in logs.

Same behaviour since Jaunty 9.04 with:
- ATI Mobility X600 in a HP Compaq nx8220, and with
- ATI Mobility 9700 in an Acer 8000Lmi

Both running with the open-source "radeon" driver, since "fglrx" does not work anymore.

Workaround:Now running a newer kernel. 2.6.29.3 is working fine. Something in the radeon driver not interacting with GE5? Gotta find free open source alternatives to GE, but to have user level programs crashing the system is not good.

well, others are experiencing the problem, so I changed status to confirmed, iamhimay seems to have found a way to avoid the problem.

I also found a workaround: just turn off "View - Atmosphere". Then Google Earth seems stable even while rendering many 3D buildings! See 3 comments above for some specs of my systems.

Without any success I tried GE 5.0 and 4.3, the latest drivers from xorg-edgers and different values in xorg.conf (I tried different values for AccelMethod, AccelDFS, EnablePageFlip, ColorTiling and FBTexPercent).

Is this still an issue with Lucid? Could you please attach your Xorg.0.log to the report after getting the crash? Thanks in advance.

I have a similar issue with 10.04, ATI 4670 OSS drivers: while using Google Earth, screen first turns black, then white with vertical black lines. Had to power-cycle the machine to get out of this state.

Turns out to be reproducible; doesn't always happen, but frequently. I do like this:
- start Google Earth, move to some 3D buildings and zoom in
- iconify Google Earth
- start Firefox, goto Google Maps
- sometimes the crash happens immediately, else play with Google Maps and/or Google Earth for some time

Problem is gone with mainline kernel 2.6.34!

Could someone kindly pick this up and merge the latest radeon driver into the Ubuntu 10.04 stock kernel line?

By going for a mainline kernel I have cut myself off from future security updates (ureadahead stopped working as well).
Without it, a popular application (Google Earth) crashes on popular hardware (ATI 4670).
Not only does the application crash, it kills the whole OS.

Neither of this should happen with a stable/LTS release!

Thanks

Tom

Kevin Turcotte, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Jaunty reached EOL on October 23, 2010.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
